I’ve been spending a lot of time lately working on automating the home selling and home buying process for my clients. In the course of doing so, I’ve been asking myself some questions:
- What websites, apps and social media avenues do I need to be using to make sure that I’m staying current with the other Realtors® in our area?
- What are other Realtors® offering their clients, technologically speaking, that I’m not?
In the course of refining what I do online, I came to a realization: I was missing the point.
I keep asking myself what other Realtors® are doing, instead of asking the more important questions: What do my current and potential clients want and need from me? What are their hopes and plans for the future? And what do I really need to focus on to help them fulfill those hopes and plans?
Real Estate is a personal business that is still done face-to-face. Or at least it should be. After all, your home is a big part of your life, both financially and personally. When you choose the person who is going to help you buy or sell such an important part of your life, there needs to be trust. The type of trust and connection between two people who have sat down across from each other and spoken frankly.
And, that to me, is the point.
Don’t get me wrong, the technological side of the business is important. But it should be geared toward serving the client’s hopes and plans for the future. And it won’t take the place of knowledge and experience.
One example: I recently had a client who was looking for a home in North Arlington, but was having a very hard time finding the right property. We looked high and low on the MRIS, through for sale by owner listings, and every other avenue available to us online. No luck.
So we had to go low tech. I found a list of homes that matched the buyer’s criteria, and mailed letters the owners. It took a few mailing cycles, but eventually I was able to find someone who wanted to sell. And I was able to help my buyer find a property that wouldn’t have been available otherwise.
So when you’re looking for a Realtor® to help you fulfill your hopes and plans for the future, I hope you keep in mind that trust is vital, there’s no app for experience and expertise.
