Fall and it’s time to focus on the lawn. One of my clients had a beautiful lawn. This is a condensed version of her lawn recipe. I’ve left out product recommendations. For information about what is best for your lawn and lawn care products visit a nursery or talk with a lawn care specialist.
Weed and Crabgrass prevention:
Need to overseed?
Use a product that allows grass to geminate but controls crabgrass
Do not need to overseed the lawn in the Spring/Fall?
Use a product that stops crabgrass and goosegrass for the entire year.
Weed killer for existing weeds throughout the season:
Weed-B-Gon. Spot treat weeds.
Adjusting soil pH:
Adjust pH is lawn is below 6.5. Many nurseries can test pH.
Insect and grub control:
Normally applied in August. Check with a lawn care specialist if this can be applied now.
Fertilizer:
Apply winter fertilizer three times, three weeks apart. Now is an excellent time to seed,
Aeration:
Aerate by the type of grass planted. August to September is the time to aerate cool season grasses. Warm season grasses are best aerated in June and July. A quick Google search will explain the ‘in’s and out’s’ of aeration.
